Individual therapy for the creative, ambitious woman ready to feel like herself again.

What Individual Therapy Is

Ashley K Whelan LPCC, somatic therapist in Carmel, California offering EMDR therapy.

This is the home base of my practice — where everything else (somatic work, EMDR, ADHD coaching, psychedelic integration) gets woven together around you. We build the work from your goals, your own unique wiring, and what your nervous system is asking for in real time.

What we might work on

  • Burnout, overwhelm, and the crash-and-burn cycle

  • Rejection sensitivity, imposter feelings, and the fear of failing

  • Procrastination and the gap between your ideas and your execution

  • Anxiety, boundaries, and saying yes when you mean no

  • Reconnecting with your body, your creativity, and what you actually want

How I Work

I'm a somatic therapist and ADHD business coach with an integrative, multidisciplinary approach — so I don't just talk at your problems.

Depending on what you need, we might work somatically with your nervous system, use EMDR to reprocess the memories keeping you stuck, or bring in coaching and ADHD-informed tools to help you finally execute. I'm direct, warm, and in it with you — not a blank slate who just nods.

The Logistics

In-person sessions at my office in Carmel; virtual sessions throughout California and Idaho. I offer weekly, biweekly, and intensive formats depending on the depth and pace you're after.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is individual therapy? Individual therapy is a one-on-one, confidential therapeutic relationship between a client and a licensed therapist. Sessions typically run 50 minutes and are focused on the client's specific goals, history, and needs.

What's the difference between individual therapy and counseling? The terms are often used interchangeably. "Individual counseling" and "individual therapy" refer to the same service — private, one-on-one sessions with a licensed mental health professional.

What is the difference between therapy and coaching? I offer both, and the simplest way to think about it: therapy can include coaching, but coaching never includes therapy. Therapy is licensed mental health care for things like trauma, anxiety, burnout, and the deeper patterns living in your nervous system. Within therapy, I might use ADHD coaching as a tool or intervention — helping you set goals, build systems, and execute — because it supports the bigger work. Therapy is only available to clients located in California or Idaho. Coaching on its own is forward-focused and action-oriented, for when you're not in crisis and want a thought partner for goals, boundaries, and getting things done.

How do I know if individual therapy is right for me? If something in your life or in yourself feels stuck, painful, or like it isn't working — and you want more than a book or a quick fix — individual therapy is likely a good fit. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit.

How long does individual therapy take? It depends on what you're working on. Some people find meaningful change in a few months. Others work over a longer period, especially when addressing complex trauma or deeply ingrained patterns. We discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.

Do you accept insurance? I do not currently accept insurance. A superbill is available for out-of-network reimbursement.

Do you offer telehealth individual therapy? Yes — telehealth sessions are available throughout California.
